TEAM NEWS

Congratulations go to the U14 Sharks who are again Premiers for 2017/18! A hard fought game - well done boys.

The boys bowled and fielded well as a team, to defend a moderate total and wrapped it up with a superb one handed delight at mid off by Harry to seal the deal!

See Harry's speccy catch off James' bowling - AWESOME!

The U14 Sharks have finished the regular season on a high after going one better than last year - finishing as minor premiers.  This was pretty impressive considering we lost 2 boys after the Christmas break and had Jye Riccardi playing up for the U15 District team!

So we returned after Christmas with 3 players short for our first game back.  Luckily for us we had some stand out batting performances with both Harry O'Brien (86) and James Quinn-Schofield adding to their baggy greens and Thomas Stiles sticking around (18), to provide us a very respectable 221 total.  We were pretty happy with only 8 batsmen to post that score!

The other team had other ideas about that total and came out absolutely hammering and clocked up runs at a fair rate, making our 221 look a lot more achievable than expected.  It took until the 14th over to finally get a break through when Thomas Stiles picked up his first wicket but by the 16th over he had another 2 wickets from a catch, bowled and a stumping and the momentum had shifted.  The boys really went to work and really put the pressure on the other teams scoring with Oskar Le Blanc doing a big spell of 8 overs to only give up 15 runs, with 3 maidens and picking up a wicket.  He was well backed up by all the boys, in particular Chris Roberts, Nic Harrold, Jack Campbell and Regan Spear.

We then had a bye for the next 2 weeks and then it was back against the 4th placed team who were fighting to get into the finals.  We welcomed the return of Jye Riccardi (although we didn't realise HOW much at the time!).  We did not have a great start on being sent into bat, losing 2 batsmen off the first 2 overs off a wicket that had a lot of movement.  Fortunately James Quinn-Schofield and Jye stepped in to stabilise matters, managing to put on 45 runs before both retired.  After this though, the boys seemed to be dismissed at fairly regular intervals except for the new member of our team Riley Sprigg.  James joined Riley back at the crease before being caught for 32 and the team on 111.  This brought Jye back to the crease and he and Riley proceeded to frustrate the other team with a massive defence of our last wicket.

That defence lasted almost 20 overs with Jye facing over 100 balls in total and Riley 85 balls and both boys being really patient and choosing their shots well.  This resulted in Riley getting his baggy green with a not out 58 and Jye finally being caught on 39, and they had moved the team total to 210.

The boys made some early inroads the next week with a wicket to Jye Riccardi and another off a great spell from Chris Roberts.  All went quiet on the wicket front but the run rate was slowed by the likes of Nic Harrold, Sahib Sandhoo (after a shaky first over but then clicked into gear), Jack Campbell and Harry O'Brien (the only player not to give up an extra).  Again a break through was needed and and it was  started this week by Oskar Le Blanc in the 31st over who picked up a wicket.  This was just the start though as  the boys really switched on in the last session lead by Jye who picked up another 3 wickets off 2 overs finishing with 4/16 for the match.  With wickets also to Riley, James, Harry and a run out, the last 7 wickets fell in 9 overs.

So a great end to the regular season by the boys and lets hope they can take that intensity into the finals!
